December 3, 1975 — March 25, 1976

Michael Schwass — #21, wing, the guy every team builds around — hit the boards during a December practice and never walked again. He was eighteen years old.

He came back in a wheelchair. Every game. Every road trip. When the Notre Dame Ice Dons won the Illinois State Championship on March 25, 1976, his teammates lifted the trophy and placed it in his lap.

Michael looked around and asked the only question that mattered:

He spent the next 35 years answering it. He founded the Now What Foundation. He coached and mentored until September 10, 2010 — the day he died at 53, still moving forward.
